Integrating technology into the classroom
During the week of December 7th, students at WTE participated in Hour of Code. This global initiative has taken schools by storm. Basically, the hour provides a brief introduction to computer science and requires no training and background knowledge. After a brief tutorial, the student was let loose to get Elsa to skate, a little monster to eat coins, or a variety of other options. By exposing students to coding, we hope our students see new possibilities. There are free and inexpensive apps if you have an iPad or tablet and websites where you can practice for yourself. It was great to see students embrace the experience, seem unaffected by the trial-and-error involved, and teach each other (and their teachers)!
In 2016-17, we will continue to deploy small sets of iPads into the classroom in order to enhance the meaningful integration of the technology on a daily basis. There is a range of application happening with these tools, including using it for Pebble Go! research, creating videos, and numerous instructional apps.

Moving Full STEAM AheadThe theme for 2016-17 at WTE is Moving Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead as we continue to move towards our goal of being a model 21st century teaching and learning school. S.T.E.A.M., which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, is a nationwide initiative intended to highlight curricular areas our students need to embrace for future success.
